High ceilings can be uniquely beautiful, incredibly spacious, and highly desirable among homeowners. When not just any room, but you have a primary bedroom with tall ceilings, it can be an incredible place for peaceful and airy sleeping.

However, the downside to tall ceilings is that it creates unique and challenging circumstances for the home decorator, and change your room from feeling luxurious to starkly empty. If the high ceilings are just ignored entirely, the look can be downright terrible, even with the best décor and intentions for everything within arm's reach.

According to a survey that considered 148,473 bedrooms (see chart below), 33% considered their rooms to be large, and a measly 3% reported their rooms to be considered expansive in size. This dearth of larger bedrooms, in comparison with small and medium options, might mean your experience of both seeing and decorating high ceiling rooms is lower, so now is the time to brush up on the optimum decorating tips available.

How to Decorate When You Have Tall Ceilings

A primary bedroom with tall ceilings does not mean you must accept your space will be inherently disconnected, but with some simple tips, you can draw the eye upwards seamlessly into the beautiful high ceiling alcoves.

First, when looking at both your hanging artwork and window drapes, think high and filling. Your chosen pieces of artwork should be placed either as a gallery to fill up the space, or as a single large piece high up on the wall.

When it comes to your window treatment, don't start the curtains at height, but go dramatic and hang them all the way up at the ceiling, no matter how tall your windows are. This prevents your room from seeming cut in half, and remember that with this much fabric, it is usually better to go with solid shades, as a busy print can become overwhelming.

Create a feature in the room to draw the eye so it doesn't feel lost in the expanse of space. For example, you can hang a large light fixture, such as a unique chandelier, that makes a statement, or choose one wall to be your featured wall just by changing its color.

No matter how you choose to tactfully fill up space in your primary bedroom with tall ceilings or draw the eye upwards or to your focal point, with just a few smart decisions, you can transform a high ceiling from empty to cozy.
